According to Republicans in Congress, the apparent answer seems to be that it’s more important to oppose this mosque than it is to help the families and survivors of the 9/11 WTC bombings.
The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009, sponsored by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), would provide medical monitoring to those exposed to toxins at ground zero, bolster treatment at specialized centers for those afflicted by toxins on Sept. 11 and reopen a compensation fund to provide for the economic loss of victims.
And it would be paid for entirely by closing a tax loophole that allows FOREIGN companies that do business in the U.S. to escape U.S. taxes.
What did the Republicans in Congress decide about this bill to help victims of 9/11?
According to the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, the bill "creates a massive new entitlement program, exposes taxpayers to increased litigation and is ‘paid for’ with tax increases and potential job losses.”
Way to GO Republicans! You don’t support helping victims of 9/11, but you DO support allowing foreign corporations to avoid U.S. taxes!
Could anything be more cynical than the Republican claims about how terrible the NYC mosque is, in light of the Republican refusal to commit to helping the actual victims of 9/11?
http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthrush/0710/House_GOP_leaders_911_first_responders_aid_bill_a_massive_new_entitlement_program.html
And, even though those victims suffered every bit as much as any U.S. combat soldier, a lot of the people HERE seem to AGREE that the United States owes them nothing!
Cynical, hypocritical Republicans and conservatives–Do you also believe we should deny veterans’ benefits to our troops after they come home from the battle field? If you don’t, then why not support 9/11 victims WHO HAVE SUFFERED JUST AS MUCH, IF NOT MORE?
What the Socialist Dems don’t want you to know is the fact that this bill sets up a huge new entitlement program that will be paid for by higher taxes on all of us. That means it will hurt businesses and us working folks. The Dems could have paid for the bill by other fiscally responsible means, but they chose not to and fill it full of pork to include medical for illegal aliens. They would rather tax you and me and try to make cheap political points than do the responsible thing for the country. So, who is really against the 911 responders. The party that proposes a fiscally responsible and effective method, or the party that grandstands on a contrived, fiscally irresponsible Bill that hurts more than it helps? This is just another lame attempt by the Socialists to set up another entitlement program at the nations expense, knowing the GOP would oppose it,

thus the Dems get the opportunity to once again demonize them in an effort to make themselves look better in the run up to the mid-term elections. That’s it, plain and simple, not that the cool aid drinking liberal Dems would or could admit…….This rabid dog — Weiner — needs to be thrown out of office. He is a disgrace to the Institution and should be thoroughly rebuked by his constituents, that is, if they can see the truth in spite of his theatrics…….. o_O

WELL PLAYED SIR!

Why give SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS to 9/11 first responders?
They were doing the job they were hired to do.
They have health insurance through their departments already.
Why should our tax dollars be spent making these guys wealthy just for doing their jobs?
Democrats are wrapping the flag around this slush fund.

The democrats refusing to help the 9/11 families when they refused debate for the bill and allowed for a 2/3 vote knowingly that it wouldnt get passed/ when they already have enough votes to pass it with a simple majority

The following is EXACTLY why I am pulling almost straight-ticket Republican in the coming election:

The GOP is anti-everything, especially everything Obama. They plan to do nothing but complain and block any measures that come up (no matter how good for the country) until Nov.
It is disgusting, and I hope voters really do some research and think hard before voting.
They are even voting against measures THEY wrote, because they don’t want Obama to get credit.
Petty, petty, petty.

Try again, not every Democrat was in favor of the latest funding for 9-11 first responders. Obama supports the location of the mosque while senate majority leader Harry Reid is opposed to it.
Reid also being the one that said any person of Hispanic background would be an idiot to support or be a member of the republican party.

yeah your copy and paste works.

Yes i’m sure that was all that was on that bill. I mean, why would it be bloated with a whole bunch of liberal democrat add ons, or pork, or what ever they call it? I’m sure there was a very good reason they were against the bill and not because they don’t want to help 9/11 victims. you sir, are a fool

Excellent.

Why should the 9/11 responders get anything more than what other First Responders get? the 9/11 Responders are already entitled to State and Employer benefits. To give them federal benefits in addition to what they already are getting is just p!ssing more taxpayer money away.

Neither party should be giving taxpayer money to victims of 9/11. There is no constitutional mandate for it.

Republicants show the most disrespect for America, our president and the working people.
Republicants are partisans, not patriots. They only back America when the GOP is in power. Hypocrites and morons.

I know this will go way over your tiny little head, but there is nothing in the Constitution that gives Congress the authority to use taxpayers money in this fashion. Perhaps New Yorkers can fund this?
It is high time we return the government to its strict Constitutional limits, or America as we knew it will perish.

Republicans can’t stop ANYTHING. Why can’t it be taken out of the $300-billion that’s still left in stimulus that the Dems won’t part with….?????? That’s probably what they want…..

I don’t like the idea of the mosque, but that’s a gut reaction. Do I support their (muslims) right to build there? You bet. Where would it end if we start telling religious institutions where and where not they can go? Churches are even now facing pressure from local governments to relocate somewhere else because a mall or restaurant wants the land. The city can get a lot more tax dollars out of a commercial enterprise than it can from a church. The mosque is not on WTC property, it is two blocks away. Grow up people and stop being manipulated by the right wing bigots.

Probably because they base their decisions on facts instead of feelings. The fact is this nation is well beyond broke. This nation can’t help anyone until they have the resources to do so. Those resources just don’t exist anymore. Writing bad checks is not the answer. The libs claim to be so smart but can’t do even simple math. Its pathetic really.

I can see why people would not want them to have more care than other first responders but the difference is that 9/11 was a shit-ton worse on their psych and body compared to a normal house fire. They have increased risks of cancer because of the stress and the dust they inhaled that day, but then again, so do all New Yorkers.
The first responders were trained to handle that situation and others like it, the people were not. They have put out large fires, dealt with dead bodies, and saved lives, the people have not.
The first responders, though heroes, don’t need much more help than the others that were in NY that day and giviing such care to them and only them is unfair, giving it to everyone is unethical.
Of course closing such a loophole would be nice.

Interesting perspective… especially since Obama has refused to take a stand on that bill. BTW, you do now that first responders in NY have ALL come out against the mosque too… right?

You’ve hit the nail on the head.
