How to Prepare for a Separation and Divorce
The following steps should be taken in advance of the separation
1) Documents needed for financial purposes. 5 Years of Tax Returns, 3 Years of Bank Statements, 3 Years of Credit Card Statements, A recent Credit Report & More
2) Documents that show the date of separation and current values of marital assets. Investments, Appraisals of Real Property, If a spouse owned a business, 5 years of corporate tax returns, Insurance Policies, Retirement Accounts & More
Finally, making an inventory of the marital property including current bank account information, inventory all insurance policies, inventory of retirement accounts including account numbers, photograph or video tape the current home and contents and any secondary home as well. In addition, if you suspect your spouse is having an affair, gather information like data from a family computer that is shared by both spouses that is not password protected or using a private investigator.
